"THE BEST OF THE YEAR 202 2", Revista de Vinhos

2 February 2023

"The Best of the Year" by Revista de Vinhos, also known as the "wine and gastronomy Oscars" in Portugal, awarded several personalities and projects, in its 26th edition. This Friday, February 3, at the Centro de Congressos da Alfândega do Porto, once again in a face-to-face format, the awards announcement and delivery dinner will bring together about a thousand guests.

"It is the annual moment in which we highlight merit" - Nuno Guedes Vaz Pires

"Wine of the Year", "Producer of the Year", "Winemaker of the Year", "Chef of the Year", "Restaurant of the Year", "Gastronomic Destination of the Year" and the "Personality in Wine", "Personality in Gastronomy" and "Personality in Brazil" awards are some of the most significant distinctions from a total of 25 categories.

In this 26th edition, the annual awards of the publication pay tribute to two great names in the wine world - the producer Domingos Alves de Sousa and the winemaker Peter Bright.

Domingos Alves de Sousa was one of the pioneers in the Douro to produce DOC wines, in the early 1990s. A civil engineer by training, he inherited and multiplied the family's land holdings, reinvented the business, and became a reference in winemaking. Australian Peter Bright arrived in Portugal in the mid-1970s, having himself contributed to another revolution - the oenological one. He produced wines in various regions of the country and the world, helped train dozens of Portuguese winemakers until he moved forward with his personal project Terras d'Alter, in the northern Alentejo.

The "Best of the Year" of Revista de Vinhos (Wine Magazine) will begin at 5 p.m. with a reception for guests, followed, at 6:30 p.m., by the announcement and awarding of diplomas to the "30 Wines of Excellence" - the set of wines that most surprised the tasting panel of the publication, after a year of evaluation of more than 6,000 samples.

The dinner to announce and award the prizes will begin at 7:30 pm, and the presence of the Minister of Agriculture and Food, Maria do Céu Antunes, as well as the Secretary of State for Tourism, Nuno Fazenda, is confirmed.

"The Revista de Vinhos awards are a compliment to the best that the sector has: the people and the projects that make us go further as a country," says Nuno Guedes Vaz Pires, director of Revista de Vinhos.

"Finding merit implies being on the ground to know first-hand what's being done in Portugal and what's going on in the world to be able to keep up with the dynamism of agile and sophisticated sectors that create trends. To classify this merit implies objectivity, rigor, independence and perspicacity, which one has to ally and combine with this knowledge obtained and processed day by day. Having merit deserves recognition."

"Regardless of the dimension, what matters is to reinforce this will to go further, thanking, recognizing and valuing the merit of the results that are achieved (...) And 'The Best of the Year' of Revista de Vinhos (Wine Magazine) are the culmination of this," emphasizes Nuno Pires.

Again presented by Maria Cerqueira Gomes and José João Santos, the ceremony of "The Best of the Year" of Revista de Vinhos will be broadcast on the social networks pages and the YouTube channel of Revista de Vinhos.
