Douro celebrates 24 years as a UNESCO World Heritage Site

15 December 2025

24th Anniversary of the Alto Douro Wine Region's Classification as a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Twenty-four years ago, the Alto Douro Wine Region was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A territory shaped by the hand of man, by time, and by a passion for the land. This distinction was awarded in 2001, following an evaluation by the World Heritage Committee, which recognized the Alto Douro Wine Region as a Living, Evolving Cultural Landscape, highlighting the more than two thousand years of wine-growing history, human adaptation to the natural conditions of the Douro Valley, and the preservation of traditional practices that remain active to this day.

At Douro, each terrace tells a story, each harvest is a living memory, and each landscape is a legacy that spans generations.
