Douro is a Finalist for "Revelation Destination 2024" in the AHRESP Awards

30 April 2024

The 8th edition of the AHRESP Awards aims to recognize the "best in Portugal" in various categories. The Douro region is among the finalists, nominated as one of the top five for "Revelation Destination 2024."

Douro stands out for its rich history and stunning landscapes, as well as its strong ties to gastronomy, European culture, and winemaking. "We intend to make another step forward in promoting this territory, where time seems to stand still and every moment becomes a precious memory," says the Douro Intermunicipal Community.

CIM Douro led the project "Douro, European City of Wine - 2023," the first integrated territory to receive this recognition by the European Network of Wine Cities (RECEVIN). Nineteen municipalities joined forces to turn Douro into the European Capital of Wine, organizing a series of events focused on gastronomy and wine, both at national and international levels. In 2023, Douro was the European wine capital, which had a positive impact on the tourism sector, especially on enotourism, hotel, and restaurant industries, with a potential reach of 48 million people. More than 300 events took place during this period, including a European roadshow that brought Douro's culture to some of the main European cities. In 2021, CIM Douro launched the Douro Passport with 76 points of interest, allowing visitors to get their passport stamped and earn a Certificate of Excellence when visiting these locations.

Douro is one of Portugal's most popular tourist destinations, known for its landscapes, wines, and World Heritage status. Voting for the AHRESP Awards began on April 25 and will end on May 20.
