Winners of the '2017 Great Choices Competition'

These were the winners of the 'Big Picks Wine Competition', revealed last Friday, October 27, on the first day of 'Great Choices - Wines & , an event that by its size and dynamics is considered the biggest and best in the sector.

Sparkling wine:
'Murganheira Blanc de Noirs Távora-Varosa Touriga Nacional white 2009' <<> White:
'Marquesa de Alorna DO Tejo Grande Reserve 2015 '
' Casa do Lago Regional Lisboa 2016 '
Red wines:
' Cortes de Cima Regional Alentejano Touriga Nacional 2014 '
' Tawny 40 Years Old Port of Carvalho '

The number of judges who decided on Montes Claros / Lisbon Secret Spot (at Monsanto Park in Lisbon) on 18 October decided which wines deserve prizes . Divided by 10 tables, glass in hand, these tasters, in a first phase, assigned their classifications. Each table has an average of 40 wines. In total we are talking about more than 400 wines. The organization believes that it will be rare to find wines with so much quality in any other competition. The three wines most scored in each category (except for the rosés, whose participation was smaller) were then to a finalíssima. At that time all jurors participated. Once the accounts cleared, the winners emerged.

The panel of judges included representatives from the media - print media, radio and television and social media - wine store owners and some other experts and opinion leaders. The degree of experience varied widely, ranging between the oenophile and the wine professional critic. It is a rather heterogeneous group, it is true, but it can be considered more as a virtue than a defect. In fact, the inclusion of oenophiles in a group of test professionals allows us to approach, so to say, the evaluation of wines at the level of the most common consumer. That is, the 'Big Choices Wines' Competition aims to be closer to the regular consumer of good wines, broadening the range of opinions to people who are frequent and interested lovers, like many of its readers. On the other hand, the competition has another strand that is to help many improve their assessment skills. It also has a pedagogical function. The very choice of the composition of the test tables takes this into account, mixing all these aspects.
